Food for the Soul

If “bonding” happens with my Dad on the golf course, it’s found in the kitchen with my Mom…..particularly when it involves baking.

Pies are her “thing” and as she looks over my shoulder, showing me how to press the dough “just so”, I can feel her trying to ingrain it into me for future generations of pie eaters to come.

We had a full house over the weekend and the menu included Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Spinach Lasagna, Crab Dip and Buttermilk Pancakes….to name just a few.

And none of it would have happened if it wasn’t for the #1 Sous Chef/crumb eater/food taster/hind leg walker, Lady Dixie.

Lady’s First Trip Back to the Dog Run

After four months of hibernation, Lady finally returned to the Leroy Street Dog Run last weekend. It’s one of my favorite dog parks in the city for two reasons.

  1. It’s in the neighborhood
  2. It’s pavement instead of the typical gross mulch that lives in most dog runs.

To say Lady was over the moon would be an understatement.

Check out the last photo to see what I mean.

For now, I’ll be dreaming of the day when she can finally be off leash in a lush green dog park no matter what time of day (Central Park only allows early am weekend hours).

Good thing it’s just around the corner.

People who don’t have dogs just can’t understand.

"She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are her life, her love, her leader. She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion."

This past weekend was glorious.

Why?

For the first time in almost three months, I had the entire weekend to myself.  No traveling. No visitors. Not even a fiance in town. Nada.

When your calendar is empty, it’s interesting to note what the highlight of your day becomes. For me, it was a very uneventful Sunday morning.

I woke up rested and refreshed (again, for the first time in ages), put Lady on her leash and headed out the door for two stops.

1) First up? My new favorite neighborhood cafe to pick up a latte and croissant. Lady sat outside and put on her “poor me” face….even though she could see me the whole time. Fortunately, five seconds after this photo, a crowd of adoring strangers/fans swarmed her and saved her from three minutes of no attention.

2) Second stop? The stoop of a gorgeous house in the neighborhood. It’s currently being gut renovated, which means the owners aren’t living there, which means I like to treat it as my own stoop to drink coffee and people watch.  Lady does, too.

Easy enough.

Have I mentioned how much I love no longer being glued to an office desk all day? While a lot of my day still involves sitting at my laptop, I now have the opportunity to be mobile and skip to different studios, often resulting in discovering something new in this city that I would have otherwise missed while sitting in an office. Example A: As I strolled through Union Square today, I came across Doggupy, the canine version of Occupy Wall Street.  These protestors, both two and four legged, were there to support Merrick Pet Care and were up in arms (and paws - PUN!) over low-quality food for our furry children.  Their goal? Food worthy of a fork.
I picked up some samples (I am in no way endorsing this company -  haven’t even researched it much yet!) and chuckled over the protest signs and even the doggy tents, a strikingly similar scene to that on Wall Street last year.
Long story short - if i was glued to my desk this morning, I would have missed a canine version of Occupy Wall Street.
Enough said.

She may be a city-dog, but the excitement and happiness that overcomes Lady when she enters a grassy backyard is undeniable.  Even though New York is a dog-friendly city filled with several outdoorsy activities, there’s no question that Lady prefers country living.

Case in point: this past weekend in Southampton. She was on cloud nine!

She’s not a huge fan of the pool, but the side-by-side raft was a refreshing way to beat the heat during her 3 hour game of fetch.

Highlight of the night?

It appears that Lady’s doppelganger (doggy-ganger?) is in Paper Magazine’s “Man’s Best Friend is a Girl’s Best Accessory” feature.

I discovered that my neighborhood dive bar (which I’m determined to make my Cheers/McLarens) allows dogs!*
This photo was taken at said bar last Friday night/Saturday morning.  She had a hell of a time.
*I think this might be illegal, but oh well.
