It’s wonderful to find a job that you love. If you’re passionate about your job, consider yourself lucky. You’re willing to work harder and longer and the payoff is definitely worth it.

I recommend against journalism grad school. In high school, I had the chance to meet and interview NYT journalist, Frank Rich. At that point, I was dead set on attending Columbia Journalism School to get a masters after college. However, he suggested I forget journalism grad school and pointed out that experience far outweighs schooling when it comes to journalism because having actual experience and/or clips makes a candidate much more desirable. Frank said that if he was hiring, he would pick someone with relevant internships/jobs every time over a grad school graduate.

Newspapers and magazines are closing left and right. Traditional journalism has kind of flown out out the window, print positions are closing, and everything is moving online. So if you’re serious about journalism, I recommend online/web internships over print editorial internships.

If you have any additional journalism/pr/social media questions, feel free to let me know.

Exploring the Health Benefits of Pets (via NYT)

Want to know why Joel, Lady and I became therapy certified?

“Anecdotes abound on the benefits of companion animals — whether service and therapy animals or family pets — on human health.

The human-animal bond bypasses the intellect and goes straight to the heart and emotions and nurtures us in ways that nothing else can. We’ve seen this from coast to coast, whether it’s disabled children at a riding center in California or a nursing home in Minnesota, where a woman with Alzheimer’s could not recognize her husband but she could recognize their beloved dog.”

Just a heads up - I will push you out of the way!

New York Subway Lesson: Stay to the right!

Taking It All In

I did my own lil’ walking tour of the Upper East Side yesterday. Honestly, I spend minimal time uptown, particularly on the East Side, but I have to admit that I actually really, really enjoyed myself. If I could get an apartment between 5th and Lexington and 60th and 72nd Street, I’d be a happy camper. If only.

As you can see from the map above, I got off the 6 subway at Lexington and 77th and walked a few blocks south east to JG Melon for one of their famous cheeseburgers. Their classic, juicy burger was definitely worth the 30 minute wait.

Then I headed North East to East 80th Street Residences to volunteer for the afternoon. Afterward, I walked West past several gorgeous townhouses between 3rd Avenue and Lexington. Note to self: purchase future townhouse just like this one.

I continued en route to Olive & Bettes at 80th and Madison (one of my favorite girly stores in the city), where I picked up a new pair of Tall Chestnut Uggs. Judge as much as you’d like, but in the winter, Uggs are for warmth and comfort, not fashion. And with the recent plunge in temperature, they’re everything I need and more.

Then I moseyed down Madison Avenue past all the fancy stores, all decorated with beautiful lights.

I popped into Zabar’s EAT for a quick hot chocolate, perused the gorgeous winter white cashmere at Ralph Lauren, rallied the courage to walk away from the most perfect New Years Eve dress at pop-up store 25 Park, and did a little bit of shopping homework at Chanel before making my way to the 1st Avenue movie theater to see Coco Before Chanel.

Although it had everything in it that I adore in a film (French, fashion, period piece….), it was disappointing and I wouldn’t recommend seeing it.

Joel, Lady and I volunteered over the weekend at East 80th...

Joel, Lady and I volunteered over the weekend at East 80th Street Residences, an Alzheimer assisted living facility. We met with 15-20 residents who all felt like they were Lady’s favorite. This is why Lady is such a great therapy dog….she makes each person feel so special and loved.

Joel had his office holiday party this weekend at The...

Joel had his office holiday party this weekend at The Lighthouse, a floor to ceiling glass venue on the Hudson with unparalleled views.

Keeping with the idea that Joel works for a Japanese finance firm, there was an unbelievable amount of sushi, which I stuffed into my mouth at lightning speed. I scored major points with his Japanese coworkers by disregarding the Spicy Tuna and California rolls in preference of some of the more authentic fish, but they all roared with laughter when they noticed a huge side of spicy mayo on my plate.

Le sigh. I tried to impress with my sushi knowledge, but I can’t stray far from spicy mayo. It’s just too good!

And although there were hundreds of people there, I managed to ask the CEO of the whole company to take this picture when Joel wasn’t paying attention. I swear I didn’t know who he was, but I managed to get Joel some face time with the big man.

Major points for Girlfriend Casey.

I limited my dessert selection to the above five.

It might seem indulgent, but trust me, there were so many more to choose from that these five actually reveal an act of restraint.

There was such an eye for detail throughout the event, so much so that as guests departed, we were each given a hot chocolate to ensure we stayed warm and cozy in the freezing New York air.
